Cheesy tunes, crazy dancing and Fish N chip s
Thursday 20th July
The staff version of events……
Today the effects of the effort being put in throughout the
week has started to show as some students felt tired and weary in the morning.
This was quickly forgotten though once students pulled up to their projects and
were greeted with smiling faces and the welcome song. Students are starting to
feel more comfortable teaching and have been experimenting with more in depth
lessons including collaborative learning and are growing in confidence. Most of
the projects have involved heavy lifting and painting this week, and there are
some sore bodies as a result, but nothing Kenya’s version of fish and chips for
dinner, and cold beverages couldn’t fix. The evening consisted of some down
time and packing for the waterfall excursion tomorrow, early nights all round.....we hope......:D
Ronaken
This morning we carried on with the construction
for the new wall being built at the Ronaken and discussed lesson plans and
other jobs before deciding who would head to where first. Rachel and Alice
began in the kitchen with the cooks Lucy and Margaret and began with preparing
the porridge for the children and preparing the children’s meals for lunch. Becky,
Athine, Daisy, Tegan, James and Rachel began on the construction with Ms Wilson
and Ms Raybould before everyone gathered in the courtyard for some dancing and
music with the children at break. After lunch we had no construction to be done
and so all were in several class rooms either teaching or sitting in the
classes watching the lessons. At the end of the day Athine, Alice and Emma W did
a paper airplane competition with class 6 which was thoroughly enjoyed by all
of them.
Jubilee
Today we began painting the inside of the new classroom that
is being built; we started off with one group painting white while the others
made bracelets and taught. The whole morning Liv, Caitlin, Sarah and Ella sat
in the staff room making bracelets for the children with beads spelling out
their names. The children could not have looked happier when they were given to
them; they were jumping up and down in excitement. After lunch Dan, Davo and
Sam taught maths and Ella, Sarah and Georgia carried on painting. In the last
hour of the afternoon we brought out the bean-bags and everyone played catch
with the children.
The Walk
Today, the girls started off by painting the inside one of
the newly built classrooms which was really messy as the paint splatted all
over our clothes but we enjoyed it anyway as we had Tommo’s speaker on. While
the girls were painting the classrooms, the boys did a practical lesson with
the children which included using a parachute and bouncy balls to create fun
games for the younger aged children of around 4-7 years old. This included fresh
new activities: ‘Cat and Mouse’ and ‘Through the Hole’. The children absolutely
loved the parachute which brought a new smile on to their faces and ours a
like. After giving out the food to the all of the pupils within the school, we
ate our lunch in one of the classrooms. Then the girls chose to continue the
parachute games with the older aged children whilst the boys began to paint the
outside of the walls with music in the background. Before we knew it was time
to go as we said Goodbye to the children and set off on our journey back to the
hotel singing some James Bay.
